The bloodshed in Gaza continues to escalate: the death toll rises to more than 600 people, nearly half of whom were civilians and more than 100 of them children1. While Israeli tanks, planes and artillery opened fire in densely populated areas (including a United Nations school), thousands have been injured and 1.5 million people are terrified at not finding out what appears to be an open-air prison: City Strip. Meanwhile, Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel: 11 Israelis have died.
Our global order a ceasefire monitored and guaranteed internationally have begun to be heard clearly, winning the support of leaders in Europe, Middle East and even more: the outlines of a deal are beginning to vislumbrarse2. However, President Bush tries to block a ceasefire agreement at the United Nations, proposing instead intricate alternatives that can legitimize the oppressive isolation that Israel imposes on Gaza3.
is already more than enough. We can not let Bush and his friends blocked a ceasefire just, necessary and negotiated. 250,000 of us have signed a petition, get to half a million signatures, will post a notice bold and forceful in The Washington Post and deliver the request to members of the Security Council United Nations. Our efforts can make a big difference. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel supports the international pressure, if sufficiently intense, can secure a ceasefire. While the international community debate and delay, hundreds of civilians are dying every day. A senior United Nations official in Gaza said: "There is no safe place in Gaza. Everyone is terrified and traumatized by the situation." Opposing the UN resolution, Bush reportedly proposed to exclude Hamas from any agreement and leave Israel free to share, which will surely ensure the return of violence. That's why in this case we are heading to the incoming President Obama, U.S. decision makers and leaders from Europe and other countries in pursuit of achieving a just and stable.
To be sustainable, the ceasefire to protect civilians and end all kinds of attacks: those of Israel by aircraft or ground incursions and attacking Palestinian rockets into southern Israel. It urgently needs international supervision at border crossings, reopen Gaza these steps to enter food, fuel and medicines, to prevent smuggling of weapons and monitor and enforce the cease-fire from both lados4.
Hamas, which won elections in 2006 to govern in Gaza, says it will accept a cease-hostilidades5. Hamas must be confronted with his words as much as Israel. There is no military solution to this conflict: it is time the world powers involved in advancing a fair agreement that protects civilians on both sides and let them live their lives in peace and security.
